Magomed Kurbanov to face Liam Smith for the WBO International
Russia’s Magomed Kurbanov (21-0) will face former world champion Liam Smith from the United Kingdom for the vacant WBO International title on May 8 in an event organized by RCC Boxing Promotions.
Both go in the top 5 of the World Boxing Organization in the Jr. Middleweight (up to 69.9 kg) - Liam is the second and cede the first position to Tim Tszyu, Kurbanov takes the fifth one. We may say without impropriety that the winner of the upcoming bout may become one of the challengers for the world title.
Smith has got wide experience as a professional, he fought six times for the WBO World title, won four bouts and lost to Canelo Alvarez and Jaime Munguia. Then ‘Beefy’ became a silver champion of the organization and returned to the top position of the WBO ranking. Now he has three victories in a row and in any case it will be a thorny bout for Kurbanov.
Magomed won a vacant WBO Youth title in the year Smith fought with Canelo. Since then, Kurbanov has been moved up in the rankings, won the WBO International and Inter-Continental titles. The coronavirus pandemic’s year became useful for Kurbanov - he has three victories in three fights and also had two training camps in the UK at the Adam Booth gym.
Kurbanov vs Smith clash will lead the tournament dedicated to the Victory Day of the World War II. The event will be held with fans in attendance (max. 5000 spectators) for the first time since August, 2019.
